Printing with Spot Colors

First decide the spot colors to use and specify the spot colors in the print data. Then configure the spot color settings in VersaWorks and perform printing.

Step 1: Select the Spot Color

Before creating print data with illustration software, check the color chart that was printed from the DIC or PANTONE color sample book or the VersaWorks spot color library, and select the spot color to use. Or, you can select the spot color by the following procedure.
Procedure
  1. Click Edit - Spot Color Settings on the menu bar.
    The Spot Color Settings window appears.
  2. Select the spot color library from Library List.
    Check Color Type and confirm that the intended spot color library is selected.
    • Lab: Can be used with all models.
    • CMYK*: Cannot be used when an unsupported color (ink) is included.

  3. From the list of spot colors in the spot color library selected on the right side of the screen, make a note of the Spot Color Name that is used.
  4. Click OK.
    You are returned to the main window.

Step 2: Create Print Data with Illustration Software

Specify the spot color in the print data with the illustration software you are using.
MEMO For the procedure for specifying spot colors, see the instruction manual of the illustration software you are using.
Procedure
  1. Create print data with the specified spot color that was noted in Step 1.
    MEMO Set so that the spot color name noted in Step 1: Select the Spot Color matches the spot color name in the illustration software. If the names do not match, VersaWorks will not recognize them as spot colors. Names of spot colors are case-sensitive, so make sure the name is typed correctly.
  2. Save the created data.

Step 3: Performing Printing

Check that the spot color has been recognized, then start printing.
Procedure
  1. Add the print data where the spot color was specified to the job list.
  2. Use one of the methods below to open the Job Settings window.
    • Double-click the job to set.
    • Right-click on the job to set, then click Edit Design - Job Settings .
    • With a job selected, click VW7_JobMenu1 on the left side of the job tool area, and then click VW7_CustomizeJob Settings .
  3. Click VW7-ICON_ColorReplacement Color Replacement.
  4. Select the Convert Spot Color checkbox.
    When spot colors are properly recognized, the following items are displayed:
    Color Name The name of the spot color used with the job is displayed.
    MEMO If the spot color is one where the color type is defined in the Lab color space, a caution mark () is displayed when this color cannot be reproduced (it is out of the gamut) with the selected media and quality.
    Nearest Color Finder When the Nearest Color Finder - Apply Adjusted Color checkbox is selected, VW_CheckONblue is displayed for any spot colors where the nearest color finder adjustments can be applied. When you are not applying these adjustments, clear this checkbox.
    Output Color Displays the process color values that have been converted to.
    MEMO For spot colors defined in the Lab color space, as necessary click Details and select the color matching method from Matching Method under Edit Output Color.
  5. Configure the media settings and other such settings necessary for printing.

    Color matching is performed according to this setting.Characteristics of Each Matching Method

    The Matching Method setting under VW7-ICON_ColorSettingColor Management will be ignored.
    IMPORTANT Spot colors not defined in the Lab color space will be printed according to the density curve set in the Media Explorer window. But in this case, the ink limit does not apply. Be cautious of excessive ink usage when printing.
  6. Click OK.
    You are returned to the main window.
  7. Perform printing.
    Processing by the RIP and printing are performed.
